Over Labor Day weekend we traveled to Califorina. The main purpose for the trip was for Ann's best friend Cathy was getting married. While we dedicded to see some of Ann's family since we travelled 3000 miles anyway. We had a great time visiting the McCay Family and the newest member is Connor(seen below) is just 5 months old. Then onto the wedding in Lodi, Ca. We had a great time at the wedding with Cathy and Frederick, their family and friends. See some of the highlights of the wedding in this slideshow.

I was excited to receive my new lens today after my other lens broke this weekend. It is my primary lens I use 75% of the time. A friend lent a lens to get me through my weekend portrait sessions. Thanks again, Reed if you are listening(reading). While ordering my replacement lens, I decided to get myself a small fun gift. It is a Holga Lens attachment for my Canons. If you are not familiar with the Holga, originally it is a plastic medium format camera. I have my Holga probably 15 years. Since my photographic life is all digital I thought I would try out this lens. I do miss shooting with my Holga, Just for Fun! Here is a couple of test shots from earlier today. My neighbors have some beautiful sunflowers so i thought they might make an interest subject. See for yourself.

MIDLAND PARK — Kim Cristo did not know much about autism two years ago, so no one is more surprised than she that her daughter's photo is now helping to raise awareness about the disorder through an Internet campaign.

This photo of Ava Cristo, taken by professional photographer Keith Hopkins, is featured among 60 others on the website StoriesOfAutism.com.

The borough resident is pleased that an image of her 3-year-old daughter, Ava, photographed by Keith Hopkins, who has a studio in town, is being used in an effort called "Stories of Autism," by a Seattle, Wash.-based non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness, acceptance and inclusion of autism through photography.
"Just a few weeks ago, my daughter said, 'Hi, Mommy.' This is something I thought I would never hear," said Cristo, whose daughter was photographed in April for the project that debuted in late May online at StoriesOfAutism.com.
Cristo says she was paired with professional photographer Hopkins through Autism New Jersey, which told her he was willing to volunteer to photograph her daughter for the online campaign.
The portrait of Ava, who attends The Reed Academy in Garfield, is one of more than 60 featured on the website.Founded in 2005 by Woodinville photographer Charlie Cotugno, whose son also suffers from an autism spectrum disorder, "Stories of Autism" has blossomed from a local endeavor to a national one, according to a press release. Photographers were recruited to volunteer their time to create portraits of people on the autism spectrum within their own communities.
Ava, who was diagnosed at 19 months old, symbolizes a "powerful" story of early intervention and progress, said her mother.
"We want people to understand and be aware of autism," she said. "Ava has made great progress and that would not have been possible if I did not take her early to be tested." Cristo, herself an actress and model, said her daughter is a natural in front of the camera and had been a baby model.
And Hopkins, whose portrait of Ava was among seven chosen as a 2011 Directors' Choice Image of the Year for "Stories of Autism," found her an easy subject to capture.
"She was comfortable just doing her own thing," said Hopkins, who photographed her at the Glen Rock Aboretum in April.
"I asked her what she liked at our first meeting," he said. "She said flowers, so I purchased a bouquet and let her work with that."
Hopkins said he first worked with a child with autism several years back.
"I realized he needed just a little more patience and after the shoot, the mom was emotional. When I asked her what was wrong, she said she had never been able to get a professional photo of her son before. She was very happy."
While the experience was "incredible" for the mom, Hopkins said, he felt "very good" about it. "It hit me that autism is all around us."
Cristo said she wanted her daughter to be a part of the project because she wanted to show that "autism can look like a cute little girl from Midland Park who likes flowers."

I thought it was funny when afterwards James said to me "Did you see she posed us the same way you did". It was great that he noticed that and had fun.

Portraits of Love Project Aims to Send 10,000 Free Family Portraits to Deployed Soldiers This Holiday Season

Midland Park Photographer Among Those Volunteering to Help Send a Piece of Home to Soldiers Abroad

Old Bridge, NJ, August 11, 2009 — The PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA) along with Soldiers’ Angels, a grassroots volunteer organization, revealed today the Portraits of Love Project, a volunteer effort aimed at sending family portraits to soldiers around the globe this holiday season.

Designed to help bring a piece of home to soldiers around the world, the project is utilizing the talents of over 150 volunteer photographers across the country who are opening their studios this September, to offer free family portraits to military family members who have a soldier deployed overseas. The portraits will be uploaded to a website, www.pmdaportraitsoflove.com, and a print will be sent, free of charge, directly to the soldier in Iraq, Afghanistan, or wherever they are deployed around the world. The goal of the project is to send 10,000 free family portraits during the month of September.

As part of this project, Keith Hopkins of Keith Hopkins Photography has opened their studio during the month of September to take professional family portraits of soldier’s families. Military family members call them at 201-670-9559, or go online at www.khopkinsphoto.com to contact the studio. You will have to show a valid military ID to be eligible for this offer.

“This project is the photo industry’s way of giving back to our soldiers, and thanking them for the sacrifices they have made for our country,” said Jerry Grossman, the president of the PMDA who has spearheaded the effort. “Our industry is uniquely qualified to bring an important piece of home to our soldiers, and we’re pleased to be able to organize this effort.”

“It’s incredible how motivating a simple family photograph can be to a soldier who is far from home,” said Sergeant First Class Toby Nunn, who has served two tours in Iraq and has worked with Soldiers Angels on a number of projects. “This volunteer effort is one more way that we can help our soldiers cope with their situation,” he said.

The website was developed by Fujifilm, a PMDA member who has underwritten this effort; and SeeHere.com from Fujifilm is supplying the free prints to the soldiers and their families.

Recent Trip to D.C.

On a recent trip to DC with the family, Ann and Georgette, we encountered Uncle Sam and Rich Uncle Pennybags, the mascot of Monopoly. We happened to be in front at the US Capitol where there was a small photo shoot occurring. While respecting the photographer in charge I just took one snap for a record of the event for our trip. The highlight of our trip was going to Ford's Theatre. Without even realizing it, we were there April 14th, the day Lincoln was shot. The tour was sold out by the time we arrived, but standing there thinking 144 years ago that night, Abraham Lincoln was shot here. What a coincidence!

Canned Goods (or $5.00 donation) are collected in exchanged for a 4x5 portrait of your little "trick or treater".

This October Keith Hopkins will participate with an elite group of photographers around the country in a very special family portrait promotion. Throughout October we will celebrate “Family Portrait Month,” a wonderful opportunity for you update your family portrait (or portraits of your children), and help to support Operation Smile, which treats children around
the world who suffer with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. Along with other studio members of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), we have pledged to contribute $35 from each order to PPA Charities, which has chosen Operation Smile as its charitable partner.

We also believe that Family Portrait Month is a wonderful way to teach children the value of reaching out to others. Even small children can understand the importance of Operation Smile’s work, and they are eager to help these needy children.
We hope you will join with us in helping to make this vital work possible. Don’t forget that the holiday season is right around the corner, so there’s no better time for a family portrait, which is always appreciated as gifts for family and friends and to
send along with holiday greeting cards.
As always . . . we look forward to creating some truly wonderful portraits of your family.

All family sessions, in studio or on location, during October will go towards Operation Smile.

A trip to Half Dome!

While visiting family in Ca. for Thanksgiving I made a side trip to Yosemite. It was a chance to photograph my second love, nature. It is a grand place to visit. The size of the rocks is overwhelming. I had the opportunity to attend a workshop given by Micheal Frye, who has photographed in Yosemite for over 20 years. It was a great time photographing grand landscapes as well as some closeups. Over the winter I will be working on the fine art section of my website. Be sure to check back in the spring for the New Fine Art Gallery!
